In following this idea, I realized that it was me slipping out of 
joint, not the world (I neglected to run 'Configure').

However, now when I do this (fresh checkout, in a new directory), I get

$ ./Configure --with-readline=/opt/local --with-gmp --kernel=ppcgmp
...
$ make all
...
