Strassen multiplication over the integers


Bonjour,

I have been working on a PARI implementation of Strassen's algorithm for
matrix multiplication (more precisely, Winograd's variant, which uses
fewer additions), in particular over the integers.  This has complexity
O(n^(log_2(7)) (instead of the classical O(n^3)) for n x n-matrices.

The code is in the attached ZM_mul_sw.patch; a program for tuning it is
in tune.c, and the output of running this tuning program on my laptop
(x86_64 Core i5-4210M with Gentoo GNU/Linux and PARI 2.8.0-development)
is in tune.txt.

Some remarks:

- The main function is ZM_mul_sw ("sw" stands for Strassen-Winograd).
  To add/subtract the various submatrices that occur in the algorithm,
  functions {add,subtract}_slices are used that implicitly pad with
  zeroes when one or more dimensions are odd.

- Tuning: for multiplications (m x n) * (n x k), a Strassen recursion
  step is done if min(m, n, k) >= b, where b is an adjustable parameter
  (called ZM_sw_bound in the code); otherwise classical multiplication
  is used.

- Optimal value of b: from the output in tune.txt, this seems to lie (on
  my laptop) around 28, and certainly 24 <= b <= 40.  I also did some
  tests with matrices containing only non-negative entries; in this case
  the optimal value of b increases to around 36.

- Finding the optimal b on a given system is not yet integrated into
  PARI's tuning framework, with which I am unfortunately not familiar.

- Speed increase: this appears to be roughly as follows (speedup factor
  relative to classical multiplication):
    size  speedup

     100   1.5
     150   1.8
     200   2.8

- The results depend to some extent on the PARI stack size (I used a
  fixed stack of 16 MB).

- Garbage collection: there are currently a lot of gc_needed checks to
  avoid wasting memory.  Some of these could perhaps be removed.

- The user does not have to do anything special to use ZM_mul_sw; it is
  automatically called by ZM_mul for sufficiently large matrices.
  Furthermore, the new code is covered by the existing tests.

- Parameters: ZM_mul_sw takes the dimensions of the matrices as input,
  while ZM_mul_classical and ZM_mul_i expect these dimensions plus 1
  (due to lg = dim + 1).  I tried various possibilities and this seems
  to be a reasonable compromise between similarity to existing code and
  avoiding having to shift arguments by +1 or -1 all the time.

- Apart from matrices over the integers, matrices over non-prime finite
  fields of small characteristic (FlxqM) will also benefit from this
  functionality, thanks to Kronecker multiplication.

Comments are welcome!  Of course, I would be especially happy if this
code (with suitable changes if necessary) could be integrated into PARI.
